Knitting Patterns
About my patterns...
For all knitting patterns, use 100% Shetland wool. Shetland wool has special properties that make it hold its shape well after blocking. Use of alternative materials is not guaranteed to give the same results.
Shetland Fair Isle knitting uses only two colours per row or round, with the unused colour carried along the back of the work, creating a woven effect.
For each of the patterns below, you can purchase a PDF document that contains all the information you need to knit it yourself. For more information on what each document contains, go to the About the Patterns page. You can also download FREE PDF for Benon (Headband) Shwook hat and Shetland Star patterns.
For information on commissions, or if you see a pattern you like but would like me to suggest alternative colours, please contact me.
Acht (Hat)
Fair Isle hat designed to use up small quantities of Shetland yarn - either Jamieson of Shetland's Spindrift or Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper weight.

Benniegio Cardigan
Yoked cardigan in 8 sizes. Most is knitted in Double Knitting yarn. Only the yoke is knitted in Spindrift jumperweight yarn. Rib pattern gives a little shaping to the waist. Knitted in the round, with a steek at the centre front. There are no short rows.
You can see the cardigan being worn, and yokes being discussed, towards the end of Fruity Knitting Podcast 87

Dornoch (Cushion Cover)
Square cushion cover, in 2 sizes, designed for a one-day workshop in Dornoch. The small size gave workshop participants the chance to learn/improve technique and something which would be ready for blocking at the end of the workshop.
An easy pattern for beginners to Fair Isle/stranded knitting, it could be worked in just two colours.
Gossameadow (Scarf)
Hap constructed using traditional Shetland method, using 1 ply Foula wool. Approximately 80cm square.
Pattern includes photos with written instructions and charts.
Hamarsland handwarmers
Handwarmers in organic yarn, using 4 colours.
A small project which is useful for experimenting with colours.
Hamnafield Cardigan
Seamless cardigan with Fair Isle yoke. Instructions are given for 10 sizes. Waist shaping is achieved through small sections of cabling which also gives textured areas. Buttonhole band has a scalloped edge. In the Fair Isle yoke only two colours are used in each round. Detailed instructions are given for all steps needed to knit this cardigan.
The cardigan was knitted in wool from Foula sheep, I knitted one of the sleeves when I took a trip to Foula on a beautiful summer day.
Hinnerley unisex jumper
Traditional unisex Fair Isle adult jumper knitted in the round. Instructions are given for 6 sizes, and 6 different colour choices, using Shetland wool - either Jamieson of Shetland's Spindrift or Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper weight.
Photos of the alternative colour suggestions are in my blog "Hinnerley Jumper colours".
Hjorki unisex cardigan
Unisex Fair Isle zipped cardigan with hood and 2 pockets (optional), in 3 sizes, using undyed Shetland Supreme Jumper weight yarn. Only 2 colours in each round. The construction is traditional, knitted in the round and seamless.
The instructions are written and charted, with notes and additional photos showing detail to help the knitter, and are arranged to minimise printing.
The techniques used to make this seamless cardigan are shown in detail in the DVD/download "The Fine Art of Fair Isle Knitting with Shetland's Hazel Tindall".
Hoosiefield (Gloves)
Designed so you can knit 2 pairs of adult size gloves, small and large, from the same 6 colours. To make the most of the yarn the colours are arranged differently.
Originally published in Shetland Wool Week Annual 2019, Volume Five, using one set of 6 colours. Now 2 more colourways are included.

Seamless, sleeveless, striped top with Fair Isle yoke in two sizes. Instructions include alternative colour suggestions. All suggested colourways are shown in this blog.
Body knitted sideways, in one piece (could be knitted in just one colour). Detailed instructions are given for all steps needed to knit this seamless top.
The techniques used are shown in detail in the DVD/download "The Fine Art of Fair Isle Knitting with Shetland's Hazel Tindall".
Kinglia
Crescent shaped wrap knitted with lace edging and panels of lace cables edged with garter stitch. Short rows are used to make the shape. Kinglia is a point of land near the Gossameadow croft where Foula sheep graze for part of the year. Foula is pronounced foo-la.
Kolla (Cushion Cover)
Cushion cover designed to use up small quantities of Shetland yarn - either Jamieson of Shetland's Spindrift or Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper weight.
Look at the end of this blog to see how using different colours can dramatically change the appearance.

Shendale (Hat)
Hat designed with turn back brim to keep ears really cosy.
The hat is knitted in the round with no more than two colours in any round. Seven colours in each hat. Approximate weight of each colour required is included in the pattern - it's a great way to use up small amounts of colour. The hat weighs less than 60g. Six colourways are included in the pattern.
Shetland Star cardigan
This pattern supplements “The Fine Art of Fair Isle with Shetland’s Hazel Tindall”, which is available as a download or DVD. Each step is demonstrated in the DVD/download and skills shown can easily be used with other knitting projects.
Fair Isle cardigan with straight sides and an optional small pocket – or two. This pattern uses double knitting yarn to make it easier to see when filmed. In the film the cardigan is knitted following Shetland tradition using double pointed needles with a knitting belt and a raepin string. Circular knitting needles can be used.
Shwook gloves (Gloves)
Shwook gloves are designed to match Shwook hat which I designed for Shetland Wool Week 2014.
Using recommended yarn and 3.50 mm needles a 10 cm square, is 31 stitches x 37 rows over Fair Isle pattern, after blocking. Thinner needles will give smaller gloves.
Shwook hat (Hat)
Shwook hat was designed for Shetland Wool Week 2014, the year I was patron, and is the inspiration for its name.
It uses either Jamieson of Shetland's Spindrift or Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper weight yarn.
This is a slouch hat so, as long as the rib is a comfortable fit, the Fair Isle tension is not crucial.
Starn (Cushion Cover)
Fair Isle cushion cover in 2 colours – ideal for practising technique - instructions in English and German.
Use either Jamieson of Shetland's Spindrift or Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper weight yarn.
Tension (gauge) is not crucial. To find how this cushion cover looks when other colours were used, look at the end of this blog ".
Twartree
Twartree is a hexagonal colour piece which can be used as a brooch, a coaster, hair decoration, or joined to make a bigger piece, for example a shoulder wrap.
The Shetland dialect for a few (or one or two) is twartree and I thought it an appropriate name as only twartree colours are needed and once you’ve knitted one you will probably want to knit twartree more.
Valentina bonnet
Baby bonnet designed for a Fair Isle workshop so that the more challenging parts were done in the class, and the easier parts (frill and neckband) could be completed afterwards. Instructions, written, charts and photos, are for 3 sizes, with 5 colour suggestions.
Bonnet will fit head circumference of approximately 35-38 (40-43:46-49) cm. Centre back to front edge is approximately 12 (16:19) cm.
Wylk Ebb (Scarf)
Scarf designed to use up small quantities of Shetland yarn - either Jamieson of Shetland's Spindrift or Jamieson & Smith's 2ply Jumper weight. Two colourways suggested.
Tension (gauge) is not crucial. Using recommended yarn and 3.75mm needles a 10 cm square is 25sts x 28 rows over Fair Isle pattern.
Unusual construction so lots of photos are included.
