Shetland Wool Week Patron 2018

Elizabeth JohnstonShetland Wool Week Patron for 2018 is my friend, Elizabeth Johnston. I have mentioned Elizabeth many times in my blogs, and elsewhere in this website.

I am delighted that Elizabeth has been chosen as the patron this year. She has been knitting for as many years as I have but she has added spinning, dyeing and weaving to her portfolio of expertise. She has a deep knowledge of the history of these crafts and is a revered instructor.

Since 2014 a Shetland Wool Week hat has been designed by the patron - you can download the free pattern here. Attendees usually knit the hat beforehand so they are wearing it as they travel and while they enjoy the week. Seeing someone wearing the hat makes starting a conversation easy; especially helpful for lone travellers. I always enjoy my travels more if I meet knitters!

Elizabeth shared knowledge with me when we made "50 Tips from Shetland Knitters" together, and this short film was made by a visitor to her studio. You can also see an interview at Fruity Knitting podcast 40.

Shetland

Shetland is the most northerly group of Scottish islands. Apart from mainland Scotland, the other near neighbours are Norway to the east and the Faroe Islands to the north west.
